Welding students at Tri-County Technical College received awards, including first-place recognition, at the annual South Carolina Tech College welding competition. Chloe Hudson of Seneca received a first place award; Tyler Cobb of Salem received second place. Chloe and Tyler were among 52 students representing 10 technical colleges in the competition at Central Carolina Technical College.

At the 5 o’clock hour this morning, a woods fire near Walhalla. It occurred on 183/the Pickens Highway. Fire fighters stopped the fire before it could spread to any homes or buildings.

From the distance of Seneca to Walhalla, Seneca leaders have admired Scott Moulder during his years as Oconee County administrator. They officially brought Moulder into their fold yesterday with a three-year contract at $169.5 thousand a year. In Seneca, Moulder will succeed Greg Dietterick, whose retirement date is June 30. A two-month old injured girl is in the hospital, and an Oconee man identified as her caretaker is under arrest. We have an explanation for all of the smoke this morning in parts of Walhalla and the Blue Ridge Boulevard. Today is the annual barbecue fundraiser for the Boy Scouts, and they’ve been cooking all night long at Scout Hut on Walhalla’s N. Katherine Street. The smoke has drifted in a southeast direction toward Seneca.
