What Clemson police officials learned about drinking habits

When asked, one out of four Clemson students said they had driven after having alcohol, and that was within a 30-day period of taking part in a poll. The Clemson Police Advisory Board received a presentation on underage and high-risk driving.  Some six out of 10 students polled also said that, within a two-week period, they consumed five or more drinks in one sitting.  The police advisory board members were told major reasons for drinking included getting drunk to have fun, peer pressure, comfort, stress, status associated with drinking, coping strategy, and confidence.  National statistics covering 2021 show alcohol a factor in the deaths of thousands of people younger than 21.  The causes were motor vehicle accidents, homicides, alcohol overdose, falls, burns, and drowning.
