Weather records: Oconee rarely gets snow on Christmas

Here are some discouraging statistics for the young and the young at heart when it comes to snowfalls on Christmas days in Oconee County.  Going back into the annals of the National Weather Service’s official observers in Walhalla there’s very little to write home about.  Christmas Day 1969 a mix of rain and snow; 1970, flurries; 2010, a two-inch snowfall; and 2020, a measurement of 0.01″.  If current extended forecasts for Christmas 2022 in Oconee County hold true, a warm winter coat is advisable. South Carolina’s severe weather liaison Frank Strait says some models show low temperatures on Christmas Eve as low as single digits in the Upstate.  The last time that GSP Airport at Greer had single digits for a low was January 2018.
