Water line project start celebrated in Salem

Part of a ceremony to break ground this afternoon for Salem’s large water line project was moved inside to avoid a drenching thunderstorm.  And the irony of what nature offers was not lost on those gathered to celebrate what a water line loop will mean to extend piped water to new customers and serve as an economic development attractant for the small Oconee town.  Mayor Lynn Towe noted that although this project was envisioned 20 years ago, perseverance paid off to acquire the necessary funds.  Besides the Salem mayor, the area’s county councilman John Elliott spoke, along with Councilman Julian Davis.  Davis commended Salem leaders’ determination to ensure a future for a small town and their commitment to ensure that the small town doesn’t die.
