Walhalla’s property maintenance rules to be enforced

The following is announcement today from the city of Walhalla:

“The City of Walhalla’s Community Development Department will restart
enforcement the City’s Property Maintenance Code (IPMC 2018), beginning mid-February 2023.
Enforcement of other City ordinances and regulations, related to property usage remains on-going.
The next thirty (30) days will serve as a grace period, in order to give property owners and tenants,
within City limits, time to address any issues that may be out of compliance. The City’s Property
Maintenance Code is designed to regulate the minimum maintenance requirements for existing
buildings and exterior property areas, including residential and commercial properties, both
occupied and vacant.
The City Community Development Department has recently begun an awareness campaign to
bring attention to this statute and generated an IPMC Self-Inspection Checklist, available online
at https://www.cityofwalhalla.com/departments/codes-and-zoning/, to aid property owners and
tenants. Copies of this checklist will also be available in City Hall, 206 N Church Street. This list
includes the most common issues cited, such as tall grass, trash and debris, unlicensed vehicles,
and deteriorated structures.
Once enforcement restarts, property owners and/or tenants found in non-compliance with the
IPMC 2018, will be sent written notification and given a set time period to address the items. If
items are not corrected, a fine may be imposed.
The IPMC was previously enforced by the City’s Codes and Zoning Department. The Community
Development Department was established in 2022.”
