Walhalla interest in keeping of backyard chickens

On next week’s agenda for Walhalla City Council are amendments to an ordinance that, if voted, would allow city residents to keep up to four domesticated female chickens.  Councilman Keehn has suggested that allowing some urban farming, such as hens laying eggs, could help supplement the budget of city residents who would appreciate saving on their grocery store bills which, during inflation, have spiked in many instances.  Under what’s being proposed for Tuesday’s meeting, all hens would have to be confined in a coop or chicken run.  Those facilities would have to be well drained and regularly cleaned so as not to attract flies or varmints.
