Utility issues at the fore for Walhalla’s elected leaders

The commissioners for Oconee sewer re-figured their billing methods to their four municipal customers.  And, starting July 1, Walhalla sewer customers are liable to see higher bills.  City administrator Brandon Burton, a Walhalla member on the county sewer board, gave an explanation last night in a meeting of the city council on how the base rate is to increase for a customer using three thousand gallons a month.  Meantime, because of city hall I-T problems, Walhalla has waived late charges that would apply to this month’s bills with a due date of February 20.  Scott Parris, the utilities superintendent, admitted that customers’ bills have increased – the result of the recent period of freezing temperatures.  Some of that due to frozen pipes and line breaks.  Parris says some customers may qualify for leak adjustments, along with payment plans for those who have trouble making ends meet.  Councilman Grant Keehn advises those affected:  “Don’t suffer thru it.  Our water department is looking out for your good.”
