Two attorneys deemed qualified judicial candidates

Two attorneys, David Brousseau of Anderson and Heather Scalzo of Spartanburg, have been deemed qualified and are nominated by the state’s Judicial Merit Selection Commission to run for a vacant Family Court judgeship serving Oconee and Anderson counties.  Their election is to be decided by a joint vote of the General Assembly next month in Columbia.  Between now and their February 7 election date, Scalzo and Brousseau may seek or accept commitments from state lawmakers.  The qualifications and nominations for both were published yesterday by the commission.  In hearings earlier, here’s how Scalzo and Brousseau answered the question, “Why do you want to serve as Family Court Judge?”

Scalzo said, “As a lawyer, I have dedicated my career to helping children and families.  I have had the pleasure of appearing before excellent Family Court judges whose courteousness, impartiality, consistency, fairness, and dedication to justice I admire.  I want to serve as a Family Court Judge because I think my legal experience and knowledge has equipped me to make a meaningful contribution to the state of South Carolina justice system.  I believe that I have the temperament and background to competently serve the citizens of this state as a Family Court Judge.”

Brousseau replied this way: “I believe that I could serve the members of our community well as a Family Court Judge.  I have extensive experience in all areas of domestic relations law.  I have tried and handled numerous cases of all types in Family Court.  I try to keep up to date with changes in the law due to my appellate practice and desire to improve.  I believe being a Family Court Judge would be a challenge.  However, it is a challenge that I would welcome and hopefully excel in.  I believe I could give litigants the fair hearing, deliberation and thoughtfulness to each case that they deserve in the courtroom.”
