State inspections prove costly in Pickens County

The board governing South Carolina DHEC will be asked tomorrow to sign off on a pair of enforcement actions impacting two entities in Pickens County.  The largest penalty, $4,500, was to have been paid last month by Clemson University to settle violations of the Hazardous Waste Management Act.  A DHEC inspection in June last year turned up a failure to mark containers with the words “Hazardous Waste” and the failure to indicate the hazards of the contents.  Since then, according to DHEC, the university corrected all violations in the enforcement order.  A second enforcement action assesses a $3,500 fine to Pickens County, payable by April 11, to cover a violation of the Solid Waste Policy and Management Act.  In an inspection in September last year, DHEC cited the county for failure to obtain a department permit prior to operating a Class 1 landfill.
