Speculative—state park expansion

In the aftermath of time called on the Sanctuary Pointe project, an expansion of the Lake Hartwell State Park is being mentioned as a possibility for a Lake Hartwell peninsula off I-85 at the exit 1 interchange at Fair Play.  It’s one possibility, according to information received by 101.7/WGOG NEWS, on the 325-acrepeninsula.  The property belongs to the U-S Army Corps of Engineers, but had been sub-leased to the Sanctuary Pointe developers.  Those developers, however, saw their sub-lease terminated by the state Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.  PRT gave as the reason the lack of progress with plans by the developers for a destination resort project.  The end to the sub-lease was seen as a surprise, considering the Joint Regional Sewer Authority moved this month to award a contractor’s bid to sewer I-85 Oconee property, including exit 1.  Another possibility for the peninsula is a re-start of the process for a new request for proposals.
