Speaking FOR agriculture at the county level

The case in favor of Oconee County agriculture was advanced during a presentation at this week’s county council meeting.  The presenter, Lisa Jones, a conservation consultant based at Mount Pleasant, was retained by Oconee County.  On Tuesday she delivered a lengthy report aimed at enhancing and preserving the livelihoods and production of the county’s farmers.  Jones referred the councilmen to specific sections of her report that highlight what’s possible.  Her recommendations include a further commitment to preserving land, the possibility of a local option sales tax, and the idea of the establishment of an official agriculture district in the county.  Oakway’s Julian Davis, the District Four councilman, thanked Jones for the study.  A second councilman, Don Mize of Seneca, said he has a lot of questions.
