South Carolina’s first pediatric flu-related death

A child in South Carolina’s Midland Region has died of complications from the flu, and the state health agency says it’s the first pediatric flu-related death of the season.  And the season is now, as explained by Dr. Linda Bell.  The state’s epidemiologist says while flu can circulate any time of year, for surveillance purposes, the season started October 1.  Because the state has seen widespread flu since the first week in October, Bell says, this suggests a severe flu season is possible.  She urges protection for everyone — especially people 65 and older, young children and people with underlying medical conditions.  The vaccine is available from many providers.  Low or no cost flu vaccines offered at DHEC clinics are available by appointment.  You can call 855/472-3422.
