Soaking rain this weekend, little snow chance

The Storm Prediction Center’s Severe Weather Outlook for today and tonight.

The Storm Prediction Center removed all parts of South Carolina from their severe weather outlook; however, isolated thunderstorms may be embedded in a wave of rain that will affect the state tonight.

Also, the forecasted amount of rain we might get over the weekend has been reduced. It’s looking less rainy for the rest of today and tonight, but this weekend’s storm will bring a significant soaking, especially in the southern half of the state.

Rainfall totals through Sunday will be 1-2 inches across the Upstate and 2-3 inches over the rest of the state. There is a chance for locally higher rainfall along our Coastal Plain. Most of the rain should fall in 12-18 hours, mainly Saturday night through Sunday morning.

The area in yellow may see flash flooding and the runoff may lead to some minor river flooding over much of the state next week. As mentioned the last couple of days, the risk for coastal tidal flooding is near zero.

The concern for snow is also reduced. We already knew that cold air would be lacking, which limits the winter weather risk. Computer models have trended toward less of the state seeing snow, and the mountains have the best chance of any accumulation. The best opportunity to see snowflakes will come late Saturday night and Sunday morning when it will be coldest, and precipitation will be heaviest. The National Weather Service isn’t calling for much snow in the Palmetto State.
