So far, excess of 32K South Carolina flu cases

So far in this influenza season, South Carolina counts 32,633 flu cases.  By comparison, according to DHEC, last season’s total at this time was fewer than 1,000 cases.  Hospitalizations are also dramatically higher.  “Almost everyone can play a role in curbing these alarming numbers and preventing more hospitalizations and deaths,” said Dr. Bell, the state epidemiologist.  DHEC recommends that anyone who has yet to take an annual flu shot to do so as soon as possible.  The vaccine is recommended to everyone over the age of six months and is considered safe for those who are pregnant and anyone wishing to become pregnant.  The latest report of flu activity indicates Oconee, Anderson, and Pickens counties remain “above the state baseline” for cases.
