Scammer tried to bilk Oconee business of $2,600

An attempt at defrauding an Oconee County business was blocked when an alert manager realized something was wrong.  A county deputy took a report from a business phoned from two different numbers.  The callers claimed a check from the business bounced and requested $2,600 cash be placed into a bitcoin machine.  A worker there started to do just that, but a member of management stopped him.  It’s a scam that has made its way into the July issue of Scams Update, as compiled by the Oconee Sheriff’s Office.  “Scammers always like to create a sense urgency in order people to react in ways they may not otherwise,” says Master Deputy Jimmy Watt.  “It is important to slow the process down if someone calls you and states there is a problem. One key indicator of a scam, as in this call, is that there was a request to make a deposit into a bitcoin machine….”
