Sanctuary’s lease is pulled

A Friday evening phone call from a Sanctuary Pointe developer was a surprise.  El Henry had what he called “disturbing” news to pass on.  He and his partners received an email from an attorney for the state Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism announcing PRT had terminated Sanctuary Pointe’s long-running lease on a 325-acre peninsula which his group plans a resort development, to feature a 225-room hotel.  Sanctuary Pointe’s officials learned of the lease cancellation at a time when the Oconee County Council made good on a $2.5 million commitment toward the costs of extending piped sewer to I-85 at Fair Play – including Exit 1 in from Georgia, where Sanctuary Pointe had state land under lease.  Other than to describe as surprising and disturbing, Henry declined to make further comment at this time.  The question arises that, if Sanctuary Pointe’s plans are no longer supported by the PRT, what, if anything, might be in store for the property.  101.7/WGOG NEWS has picked up rumblings that an alternate project is possible, but none of our well-placed sources will comment on specifics.
