Reassessment called “fair process”

Periodic countywide revaluation helps government track tax base expansion, along with identifying where there are changes that should lower one’s tax bill.  Oconee’s next reassessment, to reflect on 2023 property bills, was debated during last night’s county council meeting.  As a council candidate from the audience questioned the p[ossibility that reassessment could enable the governing authority to raise taxes by as much as 15%.  Kay Keehn Knapp, challenger for the District One seat, got reactions from John Elliott, the District One incumbent, as well as from Julian Davis of District Four.  Davis called reassessment a fair process that, in cases of disgruntled property owners, allows for appeal.
