Public interest weighed in requested road closure

A city department head and a former law enforcement worker are among those requesting Oconee County to abandon part of two rural roads near Westminster.  Their wishes, according to officials, shall be balanced against others why may see a need to keep open parts of Thornburg Road and Dinky Line Road as a vital transportation route for any impacted resident.  However, Leigh Baker and others believe the county can save road maintenance money and help curb litter and other miscreant behavior by going through the process of abandonment.  They spoke during the county council’s meeting of one week ago.  One opposite line of thought was expressed about cutting off a resident in need of a trip to the Prisma Oconee Memorial Hospital at Seneca; however, council was told at that rural location beyond Westminster, residents there might prefer to venture west to Georgia and the hospital at Toccoa.
