Prosecutors call witnesses in open trial day

An EMS worker and two doctors were among opening day witnesses in the trial of South Carolina v. Mack Adam Gaines of Seneca.  Gaines is standing trial on the charge of abuse or neglect of a vulnerable person, his 92-year old mother.  Alma Louise Gaines died in January 2018 in a hospice house, after having been admitted to the hospital the month before.  The jury today heard medical professionals discuss an ambulance response to the residence where Ms. Gaines was found unresponsive.  There was also testimony about who is authorized to speak to medical personnel about care plans for someone who can’t communicate on their own behalf.  The trial adjourned for the day late this afternoon and is to resume at 9 in the morning.  The state’s prosecutors are Deputy Solicitor Jason Alderman and Assistant Solicitor Brooke Ennis.  Defense attorney is Fletcher Smith.
