Police combine for a drug take down near the Whitewater Road

A McDonough, GA man remains in jail today, on a combined $251,000 surety bond, after his arrest early Wednesday morning on charges of Trafficking in Methamphetamine and Trafficking in Cocaine.

 

52 year old Shaunth Demond Atwater, of James Street, was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center around 3:09am Wednesday.  Atwater has also been charged with one count each of Possession of Crack Cocaine and Possession of Marijuana.

 

A deputy from the Uniform Patrol Bureau, on routine patrol near Tamassee due to reports of criminal activity, observed a vehicle pull into the parking lot of a closed business on N. Highway 11, make a U-turn in the parking lot, and then pull back out on the roadway.  Due to suspicious behavior, deputies continued to observe the vehicle, which drove over the posted speed limit.  The vehicle was observed later making a turn on Megee Drive, which a dirt road, off of Whitewater Road.

 

Two Patrol deputies observed the vehicle in the middle of the road on Megee Road with the trunk open and a passenger, later identified as Atwater, running away from the vehicle.  While pursuing the passenger on foot, a deputy took Atwater into custody.

 

The deputies asked for consent to search the vehicle, however, consent was declined.  A K-9 unit from the Walhalla Police Department arrived.  After being deployed, the K-9 officer gave a positive alert for narcotics inside of the vehicle.

 

Upon a search of the vehicle, a quantity of narcotics was located, which will be sent to a lab for testing.  Deputies also located a back-pack in the proximity of where Atwater was apprehended.  Deputies seized a quantity of narcotics in the back pack, which Atwater claimed possession of.

 

Atwater was placed under arrest and the driver of the vehicle was released from the scene.

 

As the result of evidence that was gathered during the investigation, and according to arrest warrants, Atwater in possession of approximately 42 grams of Cocaine, approximately 24.5 grams of Methamphetamine, approximately 12.5 grams of Marijuana and 2 grams of Crack Cocaine.  The amounts do not include the quantity of narcotics recovered from the vehicle.

 

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation.
