Planning chairman warns of a dumping ground ahead

At the recommendation of its planning commission, Oconee County’s elected leaders in a preliminary vote approved a commercial junkyard law.  But a couple of the councilmen indicate that, by final reading of the ordinance, they might dissent.  District Five’s Glenn Hart last night abstained at the first reading, saying he’s protesting an ordinance that originated as a residential junkyard law and became a commercial junkyard law.  Addressing the county fathers, Chairman Mike Johnson of the planning commission warned that with the construction of two large electric vehicle battery recycling plants, Oconee could become a landfill for used EV vehicles.
