Planning chairman lukewarm to curb cut limit

A lot of time a tendency of government, when presented a problem, is to throw a committee at the problem.  A member of Oconee Planning Commission, Mike Smith, called yesterday for a sub-committee to work on the idea of requiring a curb cut and auxiliary lane law countywide.  Frankie Pearson, planning chairman, said no vote was taken on adopting such an ordinance.  For his part, Pearson is reluctant to support such an ordinance because of the potential that a county ordinance might interfere with a property owner’s right to access a highway.  Julian Davis, county councilman, sells insurance for a living and has said too many curb cuts lead to accidents on highways such as 123 in the Seneca area.  To an extent, Pearson agrees with Davis, but Pearson also believes the the biggest problems on the roads are speeders and those who glance at cell phones when they should focus on what’s going on around them.
