On guard against tax time identity fraud

South Carolina taxpayers are being urged today to be on guard against tax-time ID theft and tax refund fraud.  That kind of fraud is defined by the state Department of Revenue  when a criminal uses someone else’s personal information to file a false return.  It is important to take proactive steps to protect your identity and to respond promptly if the SCDOR contacts you about your return and refund.  Last year the DOR sent more than 54 thousand Identity Verification notices.  The fraudsters often pose as the IRS and SCDOR to try to scare and trick you.
