Oconeean defrauded of $23,200

An Oconee woman was led to believe that her computer was infected by a virus.  In the end, a scammer duped her into buying gift cards and depositing money into Bitcoin machines. Her loss of $23,200 is highlighted in the latest round of scams investigated by the Oconee Sheriff’s Office.  “If you receive a message saying your computer has been infected with a virus, we recommend that you turn off your computer and take it to a technology or computer business that can professionally clean your computer,” says Master Deputy Jimmy Watt. “Also….someone requesting that payment be made using gift cards or an unusual form of payment is a very good sign you are being scanned.”
