Oconee Sheriff’s Office statement in the death of a motoryclist

“A Deputy from the Uniform Patrol Bureau of the
Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, while on routine patrol early this morning along Highway 123,
observed a South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper attempt to initiate a traffic stop on a
motorcycle being operated by an adult male.
The driver of the motorcycle did not pull over and drove past The Deputy as he tried to evade the
Trooper. The Deputy turned on his blue lights in order to become the secondary vehicle behind
the Trooper. The Trooper then cancelled his traffic stop.
The Deputy initiated his own traffic stop in an attempt to stop the motorcycle. The Deputy
activated his siren and attempted to catch up to the motorcycle. During this time, the 1st Sergeant
on Patrol informed the Deputy to cancel any attempts to catch up to the motorcycle after the
Deputy lost sight of him due to a high rate of speed. The Deputy complied with the order.
The Deputy last spotted the motorcycle on Highway 123 at S. Bibb Street in Westminster. The
Deputy slowed down and continued into the city of Westminster, where he was flagged down by
a man at the intersection of Highway 123 and Highway 24.
The man told the Deputy that the motorcycle had wrecked at S. Hampton Street and Highway
123. The Deputy turned around and went to that location and discovered the motorcycle. The
driver of the motorcycle was lying on the sidewalk.
Paramedics were called to the scene and Deputies and Paramedics initiated life saving measures,
which included applying a tourniquet to the man’s right leg due to an injury and CPR. The
driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead on scene and the Oconee County Coroner’s
Office was notified.
The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office was notified to conduct the investigation into the
accident.”
