Oconee schools join a lawsuit

Public school officials believe social media products contribute to the increase in the need for mental health counseling.  And the county trustees this week approved the Oconee district to join what’s called a “social media” lawsuit.  Steve Hanvey, associate superintendent, says, “The goal is to hold the social media companies accountable for designing products that hook young users into compulsive use.  Any money received from the lawsuit would be used to provide needed services to our students.” Oconee’s district can count on $73 thousand dollars as its share of a lawsuit settlement with the electronic cigarette maker Juul.
