Nola Network explained to Walhalla meeting

The importance of early detection of heart disease was illuminated to the December meeting of the Walhalla City Council.  On behalf of the Nola Network, Jocelyn Bybee explained how young people can avoid sudden cardiac arrest through early screenings.  On school campuses, she said, sudden cardiac arrest is the number cause of student deaths. Bybee has a personal experience with heart disease.  She told the mayor and council that, at the age of three years old, she had heart surgery.  Among the recently recognized Oconee’s Top 20 Under 40 for 2023 is Jacory Benson, whose older brother, Javaris, suffered a sudden cardiac death while playing basketball.  Jacory travels South Carolina to extend the reach of the Nola Network.  Its founders became energized when they realized there was no push to ensure something is done to curb the epidemic of sudden cardiac arrest in the young.
