New split seen on county governing board

John Elliott remains chairman of the Oconee County Council, although indications are he is not the unanimous choice among two of his sitting colleagues.  Julian Davis nominated Elliott for a new term.  However, the remaining councilmen—Glenn Hart and Don Mize—declined to vote.  David Root, the county attorney, advised the county fathers that Elliott shall stay as chairman until the point is reached where there is a majority vote.  And it’s likely such a majority vote won’t come until the resolution of the court case against the fifth councilman, Matthew Durham, who remains suspended—at least until the resolution of his General Sessions Court trial, now slated for April.  As the result of council’s 2023 re-organization meeting last night, there are no changes in two other top council offices.  Davis remains council chairman pro-tem.  No one is serving as council vice-chairman.
