National Science Foundation grant has tie-in with Seneca school

A near $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation  will allow Clemson University to develop a graphic novel that tells the story of an impoverished eastern North Carolina community that was able to prove that industrial hog farms in their area were causing environmental harm and making them sick.  The pre-dominantly Black community is named Tillery.  The graphic novel, “When Spiders Unite”, will be the basis for an afterschool “STEM” club that empowers African American youngsters to identify problems in their own communities, undertake scientific investigations, and create action plans to address the issues.  The Urban League of the Upstate is to implement the “STEM” club curriculum at the Seneca Middle School and the Legacy Charter School in Greenville.
