Murdaugh case receiver is former Oconeean

A court-appointed receiver in the financial crimes case against Alex Murdaugh is a well-known former Oconeean.  John T. Lay Jr. was appointed a receiver, to be in charge of Murdaugh assets while the criminal side and the civil side of the Murdaugh cases play out.  Lay Jr. was the son of the late Sandra and John Lay Sr. of Mountain Rest.  The father was a long-time personnel director for Oconee public schools.  The son entered Walhalla Middle School the year the father accepted the school administrator position, according to a fellow high school classmate of Lay Jr.  One of the issues raised in relation to Alex Murdaugh’s assets has been raised by the estate of his murdered wife, Maggie Murdaugh.  Her estate argues that they should be allowed to sell Moselle, the Colleton County property where Mrs. Murdaugh and son Paul were shot dead.
