Movement on an Oconee County-Walhalla fire contract

In meetings on opposite sides of Walhalla’s Main drag, there were votes Tuesday night on an extension of an agreement for the city fire department to answer fire calls within a 5-mile unincorporated radius of the corporate limits. Sarai Melendez, chairwoman of Walhalla’s fire committee, says her committee last night voted unanimously to recommend a continuing resolution to the full city council.  She says, “The continuing resolution will continue the existing contract at the $550 thousand rate.”  Across town, the Oconee County Council approve a motion last night to make an addendum to the Walhalla contract.  That addendum was not spelled out, although words in the motion refer to continuing the contract in the existing terms until July 2024.  In a second  motion following executive session, the county council approved a change to the vacation accrual amount for the county administrator.  A further explanation of this can be heard on 101.7/WGOG NEWS airwaves.
