Mountain town modifies its state of emergency

The outdoor burning ban remains in effect in Highlands, North Carolina, including burning of leaves, branches and other plant materials.  However, given the recent rainfall, and after consulting Fire Chief Rusty Gearhart, the no outside burning declaration is being modified.  Outside burning in appliances, such as fired pits, fireplaces and barbecue grills that are fueled by wood, charcoal, or other organic materials, are now permitted within 100 feet of a residence or business as long as there is a functioning water hose nearby.
