License plate read tech pays off in an arrest

No matter where you venture in public, you can count on your image showing up on  someone’s closed-circuit footage.  Another emerging technology that’s catching on is a licensed plate reader.  And a major Clemson intersection is one example.  LPRs are being added in Oconee County, through a sheriff’s office arrangement with provider Flock Safety.  LPRs typically are mounted on street  poles, overpasses, and the like. The recorded images capture location, date and location.  This morning the use of the technology paid off in the arrest of a person who allegedly took a vehicle at the Primsa Oconee Memorial Hospital.  Crenshaw and his chief deputy, Kevin Davis, make clear officers are forbidden from using the images for nefarious purposes that would violate an innocent person’s right to privacy.  Thru Flock Safety, Oconee Sheriff’s Office will employ four automatic licensed plate readers at locations countywide.  Crenshaw and Davis stress the intent is to catch car thieves, trailer thieves and assist in finding lost persons.  The use of LPRs was brought to the attention og 101.7/WGOG NEWS by an Oconeean worried about the loss of privacy.
