Lawsuit claims proper care not given inmate

A civil suit filed yesterday in Oconee alleges proper care was not afforded a jail inmate after a 2022 beating in the facility recreation yard.  Filed for Kenneth Garrett, a penal detainee at the time, the suit alleges he was beaten by a fellow inmate during recreation time on December 3, 2022 to the extent that Garrett sustained a fractured right thighbone, an incident the suit alleges occurred while no supervising officers were present.  Named defendants:  Oconee Sheriff’s Office and Mike Crenshaw, in his official capacity as county sheriff. The suit claims Garrett underwent hospital surgery, but when returned to custody did not receive proper after care at the jail and continued in pain and suffered ongoing pain from what the suit claims is a permanent injury. Under a negligent cause of action, the filing alleges “gross overcrowding at the jail.”  Damages are sought.
