Keeping a regional jewel clean of litter

By many a hiker, the 77-mile Foothills Trail is considered a warm-up to the Appalachian Trail between Georgia and Maine.  The Foothills Trail Conservancy intends this month to keep the Foothills Trail clean as possible for hikers, many of whom come from across the U-S.  The trail connects the Oconee State Park with the Table Rock State Park in Pickens County.  On Earth Day Saturday, April 22, members of the conservancy plan to scoop up littler from a 10-mile section between SC 11 and the entrance to the Bad Creek hydro plant.  Last year they picked up litter along SC 107.  In coordination with the Foothills Trail litter pick up, the town of Salem will swing into action on Earth Day.  On WGOG airwaves, you can hear the mayor and the details of what Salem is planning to do April 22 to benefit the environment.  If you’d like to pitch in during Salem’s litter pickup, call the town hall at 864/944-2819 or Mayor Lynn Towe at 864/723-3263.
