Just who buys land near U-S military bases

Tim Scott, South Carolina Republican, is a co-sponsor of “Protect Our Bases Act” — a bill that ensures a legislative committee may review foreign land purchases near sensitive military, intelligence, and national laboratory sites by requiring agencies to update and review their locations.  Scott, ranking member of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, says, “The Chinese Communist Party can’t be allowed to compromise the security of military and government facilities on our home turf.”  In the background of the legislation is a China company’s announcement last year that it would buy land near Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota.  And even though the city of Grand Forks blocked the deal, a significant flaw occurred in the process to review land purchases, according to Scott’s office.
