John Morrey’s analysis of Oconee road paving

Addressing Oconee County Council during public comment, John Morrey implored council to commit $5 million a year to repaving county roads.  An analysis by the Mountain Rest man of the county’s 502 miles of paved roads found that over the last nine years, the roads and bridges department has managed to pave just short of 20.5 miles.  “If 20.45 miles are repaved in nine years, it will take 221 years to repave the 502 miles.”  And Morrey underlines in bold black ink “221 years.”  He further recommends:  “Spend $5 million a year to repave 25 miles. (Today’s $) At this rate it will take 20 years to repave the 502 miles (Today’s miles).  At the end of the first 20 year plan — START OVER.’ The roads repaved when the plan started are 20 years old & now falling apart.”
