Jim Sanders, Walhallan, had a stint with the Dodgers

Death has taken Oconee County resident Jim Sanders, his brother, Otto, announced this morning to 101.7/WGOG NEWS.  He died late last night at his home. Jim Sanders, who was 80, created a lot of excitement in Walhalla in the early 1960s when he signed a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.  He never made it as a Major League pitcher, but got to train with the Dodgers at Vero Beach, Florida where he rubbed elbows with Don Drysdale, Maury Wills, and Leo Durocher. Sanders developed a friendship with a then-Dodger farmhand, Jimmy Wynn, who later became a star with the Houston Colt 45s and the Astros.  Davenport Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
