James Brown teacher makes Walhalla presentation

The “STEM” teacher at Walhalla’s James Brown Elementary, Courtney Sheriff, explained to the city council how instruction in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is working out at the Title One school.  She received high marks from the council.  James Brown is one of five Oconee schools that instruct in “STEM”.  Mayor Edwards asked whether more of the county’s schools will offer the course.  Sheriff says one of the best benefits for her students is that, for some of them, it’s the first time they have been introduced to tools.  And the kids use some of those tools on projects such as blue bird houses and a 14-bed student garden of veggies such as broccoli and cauliflower.  They are learning the science of honeybees and one of the teacher’s goals this year will be a field trip to allow 4th graders to release trout into the waters at Table Rock State Park in Pickens County.
