Intricate interplay in southern Oconee

Matthew Durham, chairman of Oconee County Council, senses an intricate interplay in progress in the southern end of the county.  In his latest newsletter, Durham says it’s a dynamic involving individual property rights, economic development, and the interests of Oconeeans in general.  The start of a project to sewer the I-85 corridor has, among some farmers, raised concerns about potential development encroaching on their land.  “The situation is indeed complex,” says Durham, “reflecting a balance between freedom from governmental intrusion and the broader prosperity of the entire county, including the farming community.”  Options are available to protect farmland.  They include deed restrictions on property and conservation easements.
