Hydrant testing and flushing

Flushing hydrants is the way to make sure fire hydrants send out the right amount of water needed to fight a fire. Starting November 13, you will notice Walhalla fire fighters working on testing and flushing more than 200 hydrants in and around the city.  Unfortunately, the tests may drop pressure and discolor the water.  It’s a temporary condition caused by running large amounts of water through pipes that may not have been used recently.  Where there is discoloration, running the water four to five minutes usually relieves the problem.  Walhalla Fire Department recommends avoid washing clothes to avoid stains, until the discoloration has cleared up.  Hydrant tests inside the business district will be done after hours.
