Highlands, North Carolina’s drinking supply and its ice-covered lakes

The water tanks in Highlands, North Carolina are filling today to normal levels, and the town says, “Our water plant continues to produce an adequate supply of water to meet all town needs.”  Yet, there’s concern on Highlands’ part that with a significant rise in temperatures, there is still worry that water systems in unoccupied buildings may start to leak as the pipes unfreeze.  Everyone should be vigilant and report any suspected leaks from unoccupied buildings.  Water coming from doorways, running down building walls, or water flowing from  yards or driveways should be reported to the town hall at 828/526-2118.  Further there is this advisory about Highlands town lakes covered with a layer of ice, following last weekend’s deep freeze.  Children should not be walking or ice skating on the ice.  First responders urge everyone to keep off the ice now, as temperatures warm.  A young person walking on a frozen lake yesterday in Kennesaw, Georgia is reported to have lost his life.
