Groundwater contamination to be addressed

The state health agency invites the public to an informal meeting this month to focus on how it will clean-up groundwater contamination in hundreds of acreage set aside for home development in eastern Oconee County.  The meeting, at 6:30 Monday night, June 21 at the Madren Center, will address about 385 acres on Edinburgh Way at the Pier home development, on what used to be the West Point Stevens textile property.  According to DHEC’s notice, about 197 acres have been sub-divided for ongoing re-development.  Of the studied remedial possibilities, DHEC’s preferred cleanup would start with treatment the first year, followed by an extended monitoring period.  What are called “ABC+ treatments would take place during the 4th and 7th year over an estimated 15-year time frame and a total estimated cost of $1.7 million.  Documents used by the state health agency in its oversight can be found at Seneca Library.
