Environmental calamity at Westminster

An estimated one million gallons of sewage overflowed at 404 Doyle Street, Westminster.  On Wednesday, the result of a heavy rain, an underground vault overflowed onto the ground surface.  Westminster blames what happened on a root blockage in the underground vault, coupled with excessive rain which officially measured about two and a quarter inches at nearby Walhalla.  Westminster has notified DHEC.  The nearest stream or creek to the overflow is un-named, and it flows into the Colonel’s Fork Creek.  Signs advise people to stay away.  The ground soil has been and will continue to be sampled and monitored until any elevations in soil contamination no longer register evaluated levels.  Currently, E. coli is the most pressing threat to humans.  According to the city, the flow of sewer is restored and there’s no active overflow.
