Education information center to open at Walhalla Library

Oconee’s first Community Family Resource Center will open next week at the Walhalla Public Library.  It’s designed to make school information from local schools, agencies, and community organizations available to families without easy internet access.  The Walhalla location is one of 15 in the state to open the next several months.  The state Department of Education allocated a portion of its pandemic relief money to establish the centers.  They’ll be run by local volunteers and the Carolina Family Engagement Center in the College of Education of the University of South Carolina.  A Spanish-speaking member of the Oconee Library Board, Nivia Miranda, secured an agreement with county library director Blair Hinson to house the resource center in Walhalla, with the goal of reaching the area’s Hispanic community.  Grand opening and ribbon cutting will take place 3 to 5 pm Tuesday, March 29.  Free copies of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” in English and Spanish will given to the first 15 visitors.  In attendance will be Miranda, Hinson and Sarai Melendez, Walhalla city council member.
