Does an area high school’s mascot reinforce stereotypes?

Does the Indian mascot of Stephens County High School at Toccoa, Georgia reinforce racist stereotypes?  Jennie Jesser believes it does, and she spoke out at the meeting of the county board of education, although the board took no action on her request to change the mascot.  Jesser believes the Indian mascot does not respect Native American culture and contradicts the mission statement of the school system.  She said, “The cheers at games like ‘scalp ’em,’ doing war whoops and tomahawk chops, referring to our pep rally as the Red Rage, and calling our campus the Reservation, belittles an entire race of people who have already suffered enough and relegate their culture to an animalist caricature.”
