Demolition appears in store for old county building

The building that once was the pride of Oconee County government sits idle and deteriorating.  And every time Julian Davis drives into Walhalla he feels the compunction to do something.  So, the county council committee that Davis chairs put their heads together yesterday and recommended demolition, at least part of the building of the former Oconee County courthouse abandoned 20 years ago for a new building next door.  It’s the back part of that building that is of great concern now to Davis.  There could be a re-build on the property, say, of some kind of a commercial enterprise.  Plans to locate a boutique-style hotel there have failed.  At least one member of a previous county council was adamant that the whole thing should be razed and replaced with additional parking for the replacement courthouse and other public offices in the vicinity.  Occasionally, finding a parking space near the replacement courthouse is a problem.
