Creating a tax district will take time

Oconee’s Corinth-Shiloh Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department has issued its annual request for community donations.  At the same time, it is updating its home and business owners on a process to create a tax district covering the service area.   “Once established, this will take away the need for fundraising and provide reliable funding for years to come. As pointed out in previous fundraising letters, it has become extremely demanding for our volunteers to respond day and night to such a large number of calls when they have jobs, families, and studies to deal with.”  Last year Corinth-Shiloh volunteers answered 885 calls.  The solicitation letter concludes:  “Becoming a Tax District takes time and effort and is not an easy process.  Until that time comes, we continue to need your critical donations as summertime is upon us.”  Currently, there is only one fire district in rural Oconee that operates under a tax district—the Keowee Fire Department, based at Keowee Key.
