Clemson named in police-involved shooting death

Clemson has been named the defendant in a civil lawsuit for the personal representative of a man shot dead in a police-involved shooting in 2021 outside a College Avenue convenience store.   The suit, for Jamie Williams, personal representative of the estate of Gregory Chandler Metz, was filed against the city of Clemson yesterday morning in the Pickens County Common Pleas Court.  The suit seeks unspecified actual damages, alleging defendant Clemson “did not use sufficient care to know and realize that Plaintiff posed no threat of severe bodily injury or death.”  Metz was identified as a 25-year old Greenville resident, whose death was investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.  The plaintiff’s pleadings identify Zachary Yasin as the policeman who allegedly shot Metz outside the Circle K on College Avenue February 11, 2021.  It’s further alleged the policeman engaged Metz in a conversation “about the tag, registration, and/or ownership of a moped.”
