Clarifying our Clemson poultry story

An ordinance several years old in Clemson spells in detail the conditions by which city residents may keep chickens, a city official tells us.  In fact, according to Todd Steadman, a Clemson resident may keep as many as five chickens in a single-family, detached dwelling.  Steadman, planning and codes director, referred 101.7/WGOG NEWS to the ordinance “Keeping of Chickens.”  Among the conditional uses:  Only female chickens shall be allowed.  Roosters and other types of poultry shall be prohibited.  The owner of chickens in Clemson shall live on the premises where the chickens are kept.
